Katie Huang Shin

President
An award-winning business communications leader with over 25 years of marketing communications, management, and consulting experience, Katie Huang Shin has significant expertise in helping companies rebuild, repair, and regrow. As Big Valley Marketing’s President, Katie is responsible for leading the firm’s overall client experience and overseeing its Client Partners and Practice Leaders to ensure successful client service.

A believer that communication is a powerful vehicle for improving business competitiveness, Katie has advised technology industry leaders and challengers, helping them build their brands, strengthen their business resilience, and effectively communicate their propositions in a dynamic global environment.

Before joining Big Valley Marketing, Katie was the President of AxiCom North America, WPP’s technology public relations specialty agency. During her tenure, she advised a range of clients on corporate and financial communications, global expansions, issues, crisis communications, company positioning, and executive communications. She also architected AxiCom North America’s transformation, elevated its industry and segment expertise, and reorganized the agency around a client-centric proposition.

Prior to overseeing AxiCom, Katie held executive positions at several of the world’s largest global public relations agencies, including WE Communications, FleishmanHillard, and Weber Shandwick. In addition to being responsible for leading multi-million-dollar businesses and delivering significant revenue growth, she led office client teams across geographic regions on issues of international strategic communications, mergers and acquisitions, litigation communications, company turnaround and transformation, and organizational leadership and change.

Katie’s executive leadership resulted in Big Valley’s recognition as one of the top places to work in communications by Ragan Communications and PR Daily in 2025. She has also been honored as one of the top leaders by Ragan in 2023, a top woman by PR News in 2022, and a recipient of PR Daily’s Top Women in Communications award in 2021. Under her leadership, AxiCom North America was named PR News’ Agency Elite Top 100 and WE Communications was Provoke Media’s 2019 Global SABRE Technology PR agency of the year.

Earlier in her career, Katie also worked for award-winning technology communications boutiques. She helped develop and launch global public relations programs for iconic technology brands. Katie received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Washington, a Master of Public Health degree in public health administration from San Jose State University, and a doctoral degree in organizational leadership, specializing in Total Quality Management (TQM) from the University of San Francisco. She is a member of the Arthur W. Page Society.

What do you do at Big Valley Marketing?
I work closely with Tim Marklein, our Founder and CEO, to shape the strategy and operations of our business. I also partner with our senior leaders to ensure we consistently deliver business-building marketing and communications results for our clients. I strive to leave everything I do and everything I touch better, and I love to make the complex simple.

I joined Big Valley Marketing in April 2022 after spending more than 25 years working for some of the world’s leading public relations agencies. I’ve spent my entire agency career immersed in technology and building high-impact organizational structures, systems, and processes to advance agency business and client ambitions. I also have extensive experience in organizational development, leadership, and developing high-performing teams and cultures.

Our team takes an “outside-in” approach to understand what challenges and opportunities exist for today’s technology-centric executives. Unlike many agencies, we do not confuse outputs with outcomes.
