David Bailey

Practice Leader, Content Marketing
David started his career in broadcast journalism, where he learned how to thrive under constant deadlines as a producer, assignment editor and reporter. He then embarked on a 30-years-and-counting career in technology marketing and communications. Over a decade at Sun Microsystems, David led public relations; sales communications; demand generation; industry & solutions marketing; and customer storytelling. Today, he leads Big Valley’s Content Marketing practice, providing Big Valley’s clients with impactful and scalable content and insights for driving their business success. He has worked with hundreds of technology founders, CEOs and Chief Marketing Officers ranging from startups to the Fortune 100. As a strategist, editor, and writer David has helped dozens of organizations, from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, crystalize and tell their stories.

What do you do at Big Valley Marketing?
Harvard professor and leadership guru John Kotter once said, “Those in leadership positions who do not grasp or use the power of stories risk failure for their companies and for themselves.” The mission of Big Valley’s Content Marketing practice is to remove that risk. We help clients craft and tell powerful and authentic stories that drive meaningful commercial connections. We are a team of veteran marketing professionals, tech journalists, writers, designers, video producers and other creative types who are skilled interviewers and expert storytellers in multiple mediums.

It’s about the model, and the people. Instead of hordes of junior generalists trying – and failing – to be all things to all clients, we’re a team of experts. Media experts, content experts, strategy experts and analytics experts. Clients value the focus and the outstanding work product of senior team members who are deeply involved in the day-to-day work. My colleagues are some of the most accomplished professionals in technology marketing and communications, and it’s a pleasure to work with them every day.

What’s one thing fun or surprising/unexpected about you?
During Covid, I treated myself to a beautiful new Gibson Hummingbird guitar and got serious about improving my playing ability. I’m not quite ready for Carnegie Hall, but I’ve had a great time learning some basic music theory and a batch of new songs.
