Sharon Barclay

Chief Innovation Officer
Sharon is an award-winning and creative, innovative problem solver who brings decades of experience working with high-growth startups and major players, including HPE, Cisco, Applied Materials, Amazon, MicroStrategy, Intel, Juniper, CA Technologies, HP, Samsung, Motorola, KPMG and Deloitte. Sharon hates to admit how long she’s been working in B2B technology, but she started well before Google was invented and remembers faxing press releases to reporters. Along the way, she’s built expertise in creating robust communications strategies that are tied directly to business objectives, developing executive platforms, and designing programs to deposition competitors. Her passion is being a true consultant, equally adept at advising executives and marketing leaders, and a player-coach who enjoys rolling up her sleeves to do the work and drive results. Before joining Big Valley Marketing, Sharon held senior roles at various leading agencies, as well as stints in-house to experience what it was like on the “other” side. She’s been involved in several big campaigns – the HP/Compaq merger; the introduction of wireless charging to the market; HPE’s acquisition of Juniper Networks; and the European launch of several Intel microprocessors. Sharon grew up in Australia, worked in London before moving to the U.S., and after 10 years in Boston, and now lives in California. Owning a 100+ year-old house, she is also on an unplanned quest to break the record for the longest-lasting home renovation in history.

Meet Sharon

What do you do at Big Valley Marketing?
I’m the Chief Innovation Officer which means I work closely with the CEO and our Senior Leaders to drive product and solution innovation, incubate new initiatives to address client needs, champion our AI strategy, products and guidelines, and serve as an advisor or lead for select clients. I’m also one of resident B2B tech nerds and a no nonsense straight-talker.

Why Big Valley Marketing?
Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about where our industry is headed. The traditional agency model has done a lot of great work, but I believe the future increasingly belongs to independent experts and consultants – people with a built-in incentive to put clients and people first, not just the machine of the agency.

That’s a big part of why I joined Big Valley Marketing. I wanted the opportunity to work differently: to think beyond PR and media relations and focus on the full marketing and communications experience. As the lines between disciplines are blurring, and the most effective work happens when strategy, storytelling, creativity, and growth are connected.

What’s one fun or surprising/unexpected fact about you?
I once accidentally interviewed at a brothel and didn’t realize it until I was three quarters of the way through the interview. Moral of the story: pay attention to the small details and learn to read between the lines.

I can and will bore you with conversations about triathlons, skiing, 80s new wave music, and my love of movies.  I’ve completed more than 50 triathlons and have traveled all over the world, competing at the World Championships for Team USA several times. I’ve even made the treacherous swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco when I “Escaped from Alcatraz.”

Helping technology companies for ten years
to grow, win, and lead through effective,
expert-driven marketing and communications.
