Step Aside GenAI, AI Agents are Here!

Welcome to Top Conversations in Tech, where we isolate the hottest trends, falling stars and shifting market dynamics to help technology marketers maximize their relevance. This month’s data reflects news and blog citations in March 2025 versus February 2025 and March 2024. We currently monitor 270+ topics, with data and insights going back to March 2019.

March was a runaway artificial intelligence month.
Despite a 21% decrease from February 2025, #1 Artificial Intelligence still came out on top with over 445K articles about the topic. The significance of its #1 status was cemented by the delta for article volume between #1 Artificial Intelligence and #2 Bitcoin. #2 Bitcoin generated 350K articles for March 2025, meaning there was almost a 100K article difference between the top conversation (#1 Artificial Intelligence) and the second top conversation (#2 Bitcoin).

#18 AI Agents exemplified the high number of AI conversations; the conversation jumped from its rank of #36 in February to #18 in March due to a 50% month-over-month increase. For comparison, #21 Generative AI generated fewer articles in March (i.e., 60K) than #18 AI Agents (68K). Thus, March marks the first time in 2025 that AI Agents received more coverage than Generative AI. Jiani Zhang, in a Forbes Tech Council Piece, argued that AI agents represented the “next frontier” of GenAI.

Interestingly, Gartner recently published a report that predicted that roughly 70% of GenAI projects will be abandoned by 2027. The overall decrease in volume for the #21 Generative AI conversation could be an early indicator of this predicted trend.

What coverage came with the 50% #18 AI Agents increase?
Most of the coverage stemmed from continued technology innovations related to AI agents, positioning the technology further as a customer experience enhancers. Company AI agent advancements also caused an increase in the topic with new features added from OpenAI and Microsoft. Other coverage highlighted the increased competition in this space, ranging from global organizations to smaller startups.

#6 Supply Chain’s rank stayed the same month over month and experienced a decrease in article volume by 36%.
While it was predicted that #6 Supply Chain would experience a similar increase in coverage volume that it had for January to February 2025, the overall volume of coverage decreased from February to March 2025. It appears that the world adapted to the ever-evolving tariff changes.

What new conversations, if any, made it into the March top 10?
Notably, #8 User Experience and #9 Digital Transformation jumped into the top 10 from numbers 12 and 17, respectively. #8 User Experience actually experienced a decrease of 17% while #9 Digital Transformation experienced an increase of 15%. The conversation and coverage around legacy systems contributed, in part, to the increase in coverage for #9 Digital Transformation. Jennifer Nuckles, in a Forbes Tech Council piece went as far to argue that digital transformation is a strategic imperative.

    Top Conversation’s Biggest Gains
#199 Network Attached Storage/NAS increased 466%, pushing the topic into the Top 200 list for the first time in months let alone 2025. A Kickstarter campaign for PocketCloud, a “groundbreaking portable Network Attached Storage (NAS)” generated coverage for its alleged ability to “simplify and enhance data backup for users on the move.” Machine Learning + Security experienced the second biggest gain (+410%).

    Top Conversation’s Biggest Losses
Out of the 200 conversations, 121 of the conversations experienced a decrease. #184 Security Automation dropped 89% from February (13K+ citations to 1.5K+ citations), which was the biggest loss from February. The second biggest loss happened to #171 Domain Name, which decreased 79% from February.

    Top Takeaways
    1. No one debates if AI is here to stay. If anything, the questions lay in the quality or type of AI subconversations that will dominate. Currently, the trend is AI Agents. Questions remain around the future of GenAI.
    2. While innovation and updates dominate or increase the overall number of articles on topics like AI agents, it is crucial to understand the quality of the alleged updates and the overall impact they have on the user experience.

Will #18 AI Agents and #21 Generative AI continue to battle it out? Will #8 User Experience and #9 Digital Transformation stay in the top 10 for April? Stay tuned!
